No time to cut supports for families
January 6, 2024

In the face of tough financial times, our government is making sure our communities have the supports they need. I am hearing from many constituents in Winnipeg South who want affordability measures implemented – including cracking down on price-gouging in the grocery sector.

Our fall economic statement released last month does just that. We are supporting small businesses, addressing housing needs, cracking down on big corporations in order to stabilize grocery prices, and addressing climate change.

Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives voted to cut all these important measures.

Earlier this month, we announced the Canadian Dental Care Plan – a transformative investment for families across the country to get the care they need.

Once fully implemented, the plan will make dental care accessible for up to nine million uninsured Canadians. That means support for seniors, for young Canadians, and for those most vulnerable. To ensure a smooth rollout, the plan will become available in phases – seniors starting this month, then disabled Canadians and children, and all eligible Canadians in 2025.

While we continue to make dental care accessible for families, the Conservatives continue to vote against measures such as these, which will help Canadian families and ensure we have a strong, thriving economy for future generations.

Just this month, they voted against over 120 measures to support Canadians, including votes against supporting small business owners and women entrepreneurs. They voted against a school nutrition program, affordable childcare, and building more homes.

Now is not the time to be cutting supports for families.

Pierre Poilievre and Conservative MPs even voted against the Canada-Ukraine free trade agreement, which is necessary to provide military aid to Ukraine.

With a new refocusing of spending, our government is taking further action to ensure Canada’s finances remain sustainable — and that we can continue to responsibly invest in Canadians. We are building a strong economy that works for everyone, with good jobs and supports that families can count on.

I will continue supporting these important measures because we cannot let up on the progress we’ve made to support seniors, working families and small businesses in Winnipeg South and across Canada.
