Supporting Canadians with Budget 2021
May 11, 2021

Over the past year, our community has struggled in ways it never has before. Whether you’re a small business owner trying to survive, or you’ve been working on the frontlines in our hospitals, I know that the pandemic has been exhausting in so many ways. Like you, I can’t wait to leave the difficulties of the past year behind us.

Our government has said from the very beginning that we would do whatever it takes to get us to the other side of this pandemic, and that remains true today. Each day, we are doing everything in our power to protect the health Canadians and get them through this challenging time.

It is in this spirit that we released Budget 2021, which outlines our plan to finish the fight against Covid-19 and put Canada on the path to strong recovery.

Our budget first and foremost deals with the immediate crisis, with continued support through extended EI and caregiving benefits, as well as paid sick leave. Supports for our small businesses also remain available, and new incentives have been introduced to help spur more employment. These measures have not only protected Canadians from the virus but have stabilized our economy – averting economic collapse and helping to heal the wounds of the Covid-19 recession.

Budget 2021 looks beyond our current circumstances and towards a future where Canada comes roaring back. It focuses on a recovery for all those who have borne the brunt of a devastating pandemic. Included in our future plans are $10/day childcare, increases to the federal minimum wage, more affordable housing, and a promise to create one million jobs by the end of this year. These are but a few of the many ways that our government plans to build a Canada where everyone has a real chance to succeed, and no one is left behind.

In Budget 2021, we find ourselves with a real opportunity to be bold and ambitious, while finishing the job of bringing COVID-19 to an end in Canada. It represents a chance to address the stark gaps that this pandemic has shown exist in our social fabric, and create a future that is healthier, greener, more equitable, and more prosperous for all.
