$22.5M IN FEDERAL FUNDING FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN WINNIPEG
March 5, 2021
It was a pleasure to join Minister Ahmed Hussen, Mayor Brian Bowman and EdgeCorp Group to announce $22.5M through the Rental Construction Financing Initiative for 87 affordable housing units in Winnipeg.
The Covid-19 pandemic has deepened some of the most difficult housing challenges faced by Canadians. People in our communities did their part to contain the spread of Covid-19 and in doing so, their homes became a place of safety and refuge. It has underscored the importance of having a safe place to call home.
In the last year alone, our government provided over $20 million to Winnipeg through the Reaching Home Program, and a further $12.5 million through the Rapid Housing Initiative.
Today's announcement is good news for Winnipeg. Not only will it stimulate the economy and create good, middle class jobs, it is also a win for renters, for workers and for our economy.
Federal support for this development is being delivered through the Rental Construction Financing initiative, which provides low-cost loans to encourage construction of rental housing in communities where the need is clearly demonstrated.A key pillar of our National Housing Strategy, the Rental Construction Financing will help to strengthen the middle-class, fuel our economy and give more Canadians a place to call home.
I want to congratulate everyone involved in this project. We’re not just building new homes for Canadians, but aiming to make homes that are accessible and energy efficient.
