TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2020
June 17, 2020

Every June, I look forward to attending high school graduation ceremonies and delivering an award to a student who has demonstrated great leadership in our community.

During each ceremony, I am always amazed at the level of talent, hard work and achievement demonstrated by our graduates. Seeing their big smiles as they take the stage in caps and gowns, with loving parents, grandparents, and family members in the crowd, is a personal highlight for me.

This year, as we follow strict public health measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, graduation ceremonies cannot take place as planned.

I know our graduates did not expect their high school experience to end this way. Each of you deserves to walk across the stage and accept your diploma as a testament to your hard work, in front of your peers and loved ones.

Please know that this does not diminish your achievement or the countless hours of work you have put in to get to where you are now. I know that your family, friends and teachers are incredibly proud of you, particularly as you complete your studies under such difficult circumstances.

Each of you should be immensely proud of yourselves and how far you have come.

Already, you have generously dedicated your time, efforts and knowledge to help our wonderful community grow and become a better place. You have studied hard and now you are ready to take on new challenges and adventures. You are our future leaders and citizens. I am consistently in awe of the extraordinary ideas and energy you bring towards the things you are passionate about, such as climate change, inequality and solving our biggest problems.

Your minds and your determination will lead us into the future, and I am confident knowing our country will be in your capable hands. As you celebrate this important milestone, take time to thank those in your community who have supported you throughout this special journey, whether they are your parents, teachers, counsellors or friends.

To the graduating class of 2020, on behalf of a proud community, congratulations on your great achievements and my best wishes in your future endeavours.

We cannot wait to see how you will use your talents to lead us into the future.
