OUR COMMUNITY RISING TO THE CHALLENGE
May 4, 2020

When faced with the most challenging of circumstances, Canadians have always risen to the occasion and taken care of one another.

Today, I know that many in our community are facing a difficult reality. Many are worried about their health, are facing financial struggles or are frustrated by being away from loved ones. In times like these, Canadians always pull together and provide whatever they can offer.

Here in Winnipeg South, many have stepped up to help in the fight against COVID-19. Our doctors, nurses, and health-care workers are working hard to make sure we are healthy. Our grocery store clerks, pharmacists, and truck drivers are making sure our stores are stocked with the food and supplies we need. We are all immensely grateful for the sacrifices they have made for us.

During these unprecedented times, I have been connecting by phone with constituents, participating in meetings and town hall discussions online, helping with the swift roll-out of COVID-19 financial assistance for citizens and businesses, and preparing for a virtual return to Parliament.

I am proud that many within our community have stepped up to assist those who are most vulnerable.

For example, the Trinity United Church is collecting small food items to donate. At the Waverley Mosque, volunteers are providing help with essential tasks, as well as weekly phone calls to check-in with the elderly. Many organizations have teamed up with the United Way Winnipeg to help with delivering groceries for seniors. In our neighbourhoods, many have shown their kindness by putting up messages of support for our front-line workers in their windows.

Canadians are a strong and resilient people. Although it may be tough, we must continue this fight. Those who can stay home are doing so to "flatten the curve" and protect health-care workers from a surge in COVID-19 cases.

We’re seeing results. Every day, we are a little bit closer to the tremendous opportunities that lie ahead for us. In the meantime, let’s make sure we are connecting virtually with loved ones.

Let’s make our community a shining example of what it means to be Canadian and let us always remain hopeful for a better day.

Following public health advice, my constituency office is closed during this time, but I am at work every day from home. You can reach me and my staff at 204-984-6787 or [email protected] if you have questions or need help.
